Splash Guards
The SeaWing has a tendency to spray water off to the side
of the float step when running at fast taxi or going into flight
transition. If this mode is carried out in any sort of chop or
with any load aboard, the spray will usually kick back and hit
the left wheel. Sometimes just a splash but other times a
gallon or so will kick up towards the carbs. This also
happens to take place when your throttle is wide open to get
you airborne in the first place. If this happens with enough
force the engine will drop 500 or 1000 RPM for a second or
two.
The K&N filters that come with the SeaWing work well
so I changed over to the K&N oval filter for the dual carb
setup. From this configuration I made an aluminum cover
that shrouds the intake element yet allows air to pass by.
The water spray still hits the filter but it won't get into the
element now. Problem solved, no power drop on take off,
and no scuffed pistons. This conversion takes a screw
driver and 10 minutes. New pistons are a slightly longer
under taking with a few more tools.
